La andadura de Twitter, desde la adquisición por Elon Musk, ha sido un camino pedregoso lleno de una serie de acontecimientos. A la larga lista de acontecimientos se suma ahora un nuevo episodio en Twitter. La compañía, tras eliminar la cuenta oficial de Mastodon, decidió prohibir todas las cuentas que publicasen nombres y enlaces a otras plataformas de medios sociales rivales como Instagram y Facebook. Sin embargo, después de enfrentarse a las reacciones negativas por estos nuevos cambios, la compañía ha eliminado todos los tweets que hablaban de la prohibición y también ha desactivado la página oficial que describía los nuevos cambios de política.

La medida recibió duras críticas de los usuarios, muchos de los cuales recordaron a Musk uno de sus tuits de noviembre en el que hablaba de su "compromiso con la libertad de expresión", que se extendía a no prohibir ni siquiera las cuentas que rastreaban su avión y suponían un "riesgo para su seguridad personal". Junto con el baneo de la cuenta de Twitter de ElonJet y su creador Jack Sweeney, Musk también suspendió la cuenta oficial de Mastodon después de que este último compartiera un tuit promocionando la cuenta de Mastodon de Sweeney.
